Magnet4Europe Initiative and The Clinician Well-Being Study

Huntington Hospital was selected to participate in the Magnet4Europe initiative as a Magnet twinning hospital following the submission of our letter of interest to the project leaders. Magnet4Europe is an intervention project based on the successful Magnet Recognition Program®. Studies have shown that Magnet-recognized hospitals have lower health professional burnout and safer patient care. Sixty hospitals in five European countries (Belgium, England, Germany, Ireland, and Sweden) will receive support for a redesign of their workplaces-- supported by one-to-one twinning with an experienced Magnet recognized hospital and an annual learning collaborative.

Huntington is part of the Group II set of hospitals. The timeline for our involvement is May/June 2021.

Part of this Magnet4Europe initiative is participation in the US Clinician Well-being Study; all Magnet twinning hospitals in the Magnet4Europe initiative will participate. The US Clinician Wellbeing Study has been approved by the IRB at the University of Pennsylvania and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Research Council, directed by Dr. Linda Aiken at the University of Pennsylvania and approved by Huntington’s IRB Advarra. The study will be the first large-scale evaluation of the mental health and well-being of hospital nurses and physicians in the US and the value of positive work environments for clinician well-being and patient safety and quality of care.

The study will involve Huntington hospital’s nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and physicians completing surveys via a secure independent e-platform one time; the survey can be accessed with a unique code from any computer, tablet, or smartphone.  Survey data collection starts March 3rd, 2021. Participants will receive an email with a link to the survey. The physician survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and the nurse survey takes about 20 minutes.  No personal information will be requested of survey respondents. The name of the hospital will not be revealed in any way.  The study also involves the submission of aggregate data regarding sick days, absences, and turnover. These data will be linked with Medicare Hospital Compare Patient Experience data (HCAHPS) and Medicare patient outcomes data for each hospital.  The hospital does not need to submit patient data for the study as all data will be purchased from Medicare without any action on the part of the hospital. The study will quantify the cost-implications of burnout and associated adverse patient outcomes. Huntington Hospital will receive an individualized report of results and relevant strategies to address clinician well-being.
